Yangshuo Climbing
Since the establishment of several routes at Moon Hill in the early 90’s climbing in Yangshuo has developed to include over 400 bolted lines. The abundance of huge Karst towers makes Yangshuo one of the most idyllic and picturesque destinations for climbers of all abilities. The majority of climbs are sport routes although a small number of Trad routes are also available. The Limestone rock is often dark and sharp at rain exposed locations and smoother in sheltered areas (the large number of sheltered spots allows for good climbing, even in lousy whether).
The best time of year for climbing in Yangshuo is from September through to November, when there is little rain and plenty of sunshine. However climbing is possible all year round depending on your luck and willingness to wait around for the skies to clear.
Getting to the Crags
- Hire a bicycle (up to 20 Yuan per day),
- Private minivan form Yangshuo 25-40 RMB one way
- Public bus from bus station to The Egg, Moon Hill, Wine Bottle, Big Banyan Tree and Twin Gate (have to walk the last bit) 3 RMB one way.
- Walk (could take a while to many of the good spots)
- If you want any more suggestions, call into our office and we can happily make suggestions.
Access
Access is generally free of charge, watch out for local farmland and be respectful to the local communities. DON’T TRASH THEIR BACKYARD. At some crags locals will turn up ask for payment, keep smiling, say no and leave the crag sooner rather than later. There are plenty of places you can climb hassle free. The Yangshuo Access Initiative clearly states that you should not pay locals a climbing fee and by refusing to, you reduce the economic value of the crag and thus stop the cycle before people start to rely on your money.
Bouldering and climbing walls
There are a few climbing walls in Yangshuo town, the undercover gym just off the corner of West Street and Pantola Rd is usually a good bet for free training. As is the bouldering spot on the River at the opposite end of West Street (cross the road, drop down to the river path, turn left and look for chalk marks). It’s sharp and there are only 4 or 5 routes but it’s easy to get to. Other bouldering can be found at The Thunder dome, a cave near The Egg.
